January 5th BPC meeting – “Mathew Brady: The Man Who Photographed the Civil War” By Dave Bowers

Mathew Brady was one of America’s most influential early photographers and is often called the “father of photojournalism.” Born in Warren County, NY, Brady built his reputation in New York City as a portrait photographer, capturing images of prominent Americans including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Frederick Douglass.

When the Civil War began in 1861, Brady recognized that photography could document the conflict in a way words and paintings never could. He organized a team of photographers who traveled with the Union armies, creating thousands of glass-plate negatives depicting soldiers, camps, battlefields, military leaders, and the devastating aftermath of combat.

Brady’s photographs brought the reality of war into the homes of Americans and changed the way people understood both photography and history. His haunting images of the dead at battlefields remain among the most powerful visual records of the Civil War.
