February 4th, 2025 BPC Meeting - "A Study in Still Life" by Helen LaReau

An avid hobbyist and member of Beaches Photography since 2014, Helen enjoys dabbling with most genres.  Stills however, remain one of her favorites.

Helen became fascinated with Still Life paintings during an earlier trip to Europe.  The Dutch Painter William Cleasz graced the walls of the Louvre, and a passion was born.  Unlike landscapes which are defined, Stills must be created.  Nevertheless, the same principles seem to exist.  Composition, light, textures and a subject that is of interest are all important in creating a worthy photograph.  Creating a Still is a process.  Once Helen settles on a theme and begins placement of the objects, she studies the angles, the light filtering through each object, the harmony of each item and the colors in hopes that they come together cohesively.  It’s a process, but one which she thoroughly enjoys. 

Today’s program will focus on the building process of Helen's stills.  She will display both natural light photographs and those which were done with the assistance of one light.  Lastly, she will introduce how one can find a photo within a photo.
